  1. Firefox loads only 50% of pages when DC++ running I am having a strange problem with the latest versions of DC++, and Firefox. Only up to recently, Firefox has increasingly been failing to load webpages. Basically, when Dc++ is connected, Firefox fails to load pages 50% of the time. Sometimes, the disconnection problems last a few seconds, sometimes minutes but eventually Firefox lets me see the page. When I close DC++, FIrefox acts normally. Note: I've been using Dc++ for 3 days now, and only on the 3rd day did Firefox begin to appear affected. I am running Xpsp2, and have all the latest updates and run a spy-free computer. Thx

    Topographic Google Map?

Topographic Google Map? I'm looking for a simple, topographic map online that highlights various elevation ranges in different countries as I travel around the world. I like how Google Maps is set-up (with zoom, and text) so something like that would probably work best. My purpose in using the map is to better plan my routes, and destinations. I'd like to know where the mountains are, and how tall they are in each respective country by looking at a map. I'd also like to know where the towns are in proximity to the mountains (i.e are they in the mountains, in between mountains, etc...). Thx.
  3. strange, major problem with MP3 player "Creative Zen V plus" I bought a Creative Zen V plus from amazon 5 months ago, and recently have been experiencing baffling connectivity, file transfer and power issues. Neither Windows nor Windows media player are able to detect the player. Basically, the computer isn't recognizing the player's attempts to connect. A balloon notification pops up claiming the USB device is malfunctioning. ALL USB ports are operational, and I've already tried swapping USB cables, and have attempted connecting the player to another laptop as well. Same effect. I've been on the Creative, and Amazon websites and nothing there (including a troubleshooting guide) were able to remedy the problem. There is definitely something wrong with the player. I am able to listen to music, but cannot access Creative Mediasource, or ZenCast organizer to see my files (as the computer doesn't read the player at all). I cannot transfer files to/from the player, and my Mp3z are literally trapped on the player. As for power levels, the player is reading minimal levels and disconnecting the player from the USB cable causes an immediate shutdown. However, leaving the player connected doesn't charge the unit either. The power levels remain near to zero at all times, as if in a state of electronic limbo. Turning on the computer prompts the player to light up, and turning off or hibernating causes the player to shutdown. I am unable to use the player portably. I am however able to listen to music, so long as the player is attached to the computer. It's strange: the player isn't connected to my computer (as far as Window's is concerned), but enough power is getting through via the computer to allow me to listen to songs. Now, neither Amazon nor Creative have warranty service information on their website for this product. Also, there was no warranty slip provided in the delivery package from Amazon. I found that to be strange? Why wouldn't there be a warranty? Anyways, regarding the warranty I've asked Amazon to mail the warranty information. That will take some time. My next step is to contact both Amazon, and Creative but from you guys, I need some options on what I can do on my own in case these two companies decide to take me for a ride. By the way, my personal guess as to what's wrong is one of the pins on the player's connecting end is bent, or broken. But, the chord fits in properly. Thx
  4. ALCXWDM.sys (via Skype) causes a blue screen crash ALCXWDM.sys (via Skype) causes a blue screen crash PERIODICALLy (not always) ever since I started using Skypeout Unlimited. I have made several calls (one lasting 60minutes) with no crashes, then all of a sudden simply clicking on a new call crashes Windows. If you google ALCXWDM.sys Skype, you will see many forum posts across the WWW pertaining to this issue. None of them result in a single real solution. Everyone sort of guesses what they think the problem is with the OP desperatly scrambling for more information. I hope my post leads to a better end. -I have done all sorts of SPY, and VIRUS checks, HIJACK this, etc (I have spybot, and AVG, among others) -I have used the Device Manager upgrade driver function (even though I already have the latest drivers) I use Realtech A97 Audio - I am assuming ALCXWDM.sys is a driver for Realtech - -I have restarted Windows, I have all the latest patches, and run a healthy system -I have never experienced problems with my sound card before, and play videos and audio files all the time What else can I possibly do to permeantly fix this annoying problem. Thanks
  5. Best Mp3 player (that's not an IPOD) ~$200 Hi, I need a recommendation on an Mp3 player (that's not an IPOD). I'm looknig to spend around $200, expect 8GB storage, and other common features. I've been considering CREATIVE Zen MicroPhoto & Zen V Plus. I'm not sure which one, or even if I should go with CREATIVE. I'm looking for user-friendly software, NOT ITUNES< i can't stand ITUNES. I also want to the option to delete songs right from the player. Playback battery life is also important. As is weight. I'll be travelling constantly. Thx
  6. Laptop power adapter/power meter inconsistency The power meter on the lower right hand taskbar on my laptop shows an inconsistent power charge. Sometimes, the icon appears to be charging the battery, other times it appears to be running on ac power, and also, it appears to be running on the laptop battery. The strange thing is, the laptop is plugged in. The power meter should only be showing the computer running on AC power (of at least charging). But, when the laptop is plugged in, the power meter should never show battery life decreasing. But it does exactly that. For 10 seconds it appears to be running on battery, and it swaps for another 10 seconds running on ac power, and it repeats. Obviously, this is not normal, and slowly but surely, the computer dies of power, even though it is always plugged in. The power adapter is less than a month old. What's the problem?
  7. the best new Firefox translate extention? I have Firefox version 1.5 (1.5.0.8), and I'm in desperate need of a good page translator. My last translate extention doesn't work with the latest version of firefox, and other extentions just don't cut for page to page translations. Im travelling, so I need all these local travel wbsites automically translated into English. What extention should i go with?
  8. Site explaining dietry requirement information based on age, weight, height and gender I'm in need of important "dietry requirement" information for 3 of my ailing family members 1) The first is a 13 year old female (hard working student) who is close to annorexia (weight - 79lbs/35kg; height 150cm) . Her mother has asked me to search the internet to find out which vitamins, and minerals she needs (and how much of each), specfically which foods to help maintain a skinny physique - which the little 13 year old adores so much - as they live in California - and you know how it is there. Also, I need to find the number of calories she needs per day to maintain a healthy mind and body. So, I would be thankful if anyone here could post a few links online that show dietry information based on age, height, weight and gender. I had a tough time finding a user-friendly page displaying that information. With that, I can also find the dietry requirements for the other 2 members of my family. Thanks
  9. buying digital camera from refurb website? I'm buying a digital camera online. I'm looking for the best bang for the buck. Right now, I'm looking at a cool site called epinions dot com On this site, I search for price range, model, and compare cameras and find the best prices online (with shipping included) and have them delivered to my door. My best search brought up a Canon Powershot A520 on a site called Refurbdepot dot com (forwarded site from epinions dot com) for only 100USD - that's for a new camera link to camera here http://www.refurbdepot.com/productdetails2...ererid=dealtime My question is this: Is buying a a refurbished/remanufactured digital camera from the web a good idea if the price is considerably cheaper than in-store or other online deals? If you don't know about refurbs you can learn about them on the site. I'd like to know people's experiences in buying refurbed digital cameras online I mean the Canon Powershot A52 is supposed to be the best value vs. price at around only 100USD. How can I not buy it? note: I used epinions dot com, is there another site (similar in focus and reach) that'll help me track down the best online deals? thanks!
  10. I just defragmented my hdd. It says I have 20% fragmentation and not much I can do about it. I used Windows Defragger. Is there another free defragger I should be using that could better help with my fragmentation problem? I've included the test report, if that helps. By the way, I cannot delete the fragmented files. They are crucial and I cannot even modify them. Is there another way to solve the fragmentation dilema? 12. What are the "sure" methods of reducing windows startup time? My bootup speed is annoyingly slow. I know there are a few tips n tricks for reducing the time it takes to reach the desktop from the initial power on. But what are the most effective of these tricks or hacks? My details: Windows XP Home running on a 256RAM, 2.5Ghz P4 laptop (with wireless internet). The computer is used mostly for surfing and P2P.
  13. Laptop LCD goes partially black. Help Something really wierd and scary happened last night to my laptop's LCD screen. I woke up to find the righthand bottom corner electronically stained with what appared to be black dissolve. There was nothing physically on the screen but it looked like someone had smeared black tar or ink on my computer screen. Luckily, tapping the screen with my fingers caused the darkness to gradually disapate (now it's all gone), but I'm still left wondering what the hell happened. Is this a serious issue with my LCD? Does it need to be replaced? The computer is only 1.5years old. Other points to mention about the laptop: I do keep it on a lot (mostly for downloading) It has a loud (hot) fan which causes some overheating, and in order to keep the noise down (because I stay with many people), I sometimes close the laptop and cover the computer with as pillow or a blanket. It reducez the fan noise and I make to sure to always leave a pathway for the hot air to escape. I've been doing this for a while now, and the blackness only appeared last night. What is the blackness? What caused it? How can I avoid seeing it again? Also, if it does have to do with the overheating caused by the computer's fan (what can I do to keep the noise down without causing such a disruption with the LCD)?
  14. best forum site (maybe a few) catering to torrent requests Hey what's the best forum site (maybe a few) that caters to people's TORRENT REQUESTS? I have a list of "not so easy to find" torrents, and I'd like to ask people's help in either tracking them down or in uploading. I use the following TORRENT SITES (for both finding torrents and asking forum questions). mininova, piratebay, torrentspy... Which other LARGE TORRENT SITES do you use for both finding torrents and making requests? Note: Please only share the sites with the biggest number of users (and therefore, the most amount of torrents). Thanks in advance....
  15. Mobile handset that's like a good camera, ipod and quad-band all in one Hi, i'm looking to buy a new Nokia (unless someone can convince me otherwise) multi-use handphone. By multi-use, I mean specifically, DIGITAL CAMERA, MP3 PLAYER and TRI/QUAD-BAND telephone - ALL IN ONE PRODUCT. I'm thinking NOKIA 3250 http://www.nokia.com.hk/nokia/0,,85469,00.html but that's only because I saw an ad. I'm in China now (but I think it's too expensive), to buy such a phone here, so my question is about getting "the right phone" in HONG KONG. What model (aside from the 3250), would you recommend for someone who has GIGABYTES of music, takes LOADS of pictures and TRAVELS constantly (sometimes to different continents). I NEED A PHONE: - that can play my MP3z (and store them) - 5GB (though I'll settle for less) - take clear, beautiful digital pictures (and via USB upload them to computer) - be operable in different countries with relative ease (unlocked network, easy SIM card swapping) I'm a traveller, so my budget is limited, but I'll take the model that's economical (if I can). HOW MUCH would such a phone go for in HONG KONG? Would it absolutely have to be the NOKIA 3250 (or are there older (less costly) alternatives that present or former owners can vouch for? REMEMBER, one phone - 3 uses. Thanks in advance for your model recommendations, prices and locations (in Hong Kong) to go shopping :) side-note: What's a good site that displays the world's operable mobile frequency/GSM zones? (for example, which countries fall under the 800mhz, which under the 1900mhz, etc...) This would help me a lot as I travel.
