Tehran-Barcelona-Stockholm- the Swedish finals for the Eurovison Song Contest
One of the debutants in the Swedish finals for the Eurovison Song Contest is Cameron Cartio. A highly charismatic and young 26-year old, born in Iran and raised in the city of Malmoe , Sweden . Cameron describes himself as a happy and positive person, an ambassador of joy so to speak. All his songs are of upbeat and dance driven nature with contagious energy flowing through them. After having created Hip Hop and Euro-Techno in the past, he has now found his own pop/dance genre influenced by Persian music and its special rhythms. "The 6/8 beat comes naturally while the 4/4 came alongside rock music to me”. I hear the difference, but when I compose, it all just flows spontaneously.
Cameron was born in Tehran , Iran and just fresh out of second grade, he spent a year in Barcelona-Spain together with his family. Later they moved to Malmoe , Sweden .
It doesn't take much to think about another familiar Malmoe face, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, current European Soccer star to see the similarities; Cameron nods, "Yes! Zlatan proved you don't have to speak perfect Swedish without an accent in order to reach major success. I'd like to be a positive role model as well and show that you can succeed in anything if you put your heart and soul into it. I'd love to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest and demonstrate the caliber of artists which this country still can produce. Sweden is truly my home; after all I haven't been in Iran for 19 years. ”
The lyrics to Cameron's soon to be released single and contester in the 2005 Swedish finals for the Eurovison Song Contest are written in a completely self innovated language. "I wrote the song and needed lyrics for it. I didn't have much time to write so I made up some words just to be able to remember the melody later on. To my own surprise, it sounded really good and I kept it. It doesn't sound like any other language in the world, but who knows maybe in some remote land people talk like this" he laughs. To Cameron, Roma means Borderless. "You are the artist, do whatever your creative wishes command you. The purpose of the song is for the audience to feel good, enjoy themselves and gain positive energy listening to it; that goes for all my music". His eyes sparkle with joy as he makes that statement, leaving you with a belief that this is a young man who lives as he learns.
Cameron was member of a Hip Hop band before he entered the realm of Euro-Techno. In high school, he formed a band called “Stereo Injection”. The band won a local talent competition and Cameron became somewhat of a local celebrity. “I was 17 when I wrote my first autograph. Getting girls got a bit easier after that to” he laughs. Soon he began writing music on his own. Many DJ's in major Malmoe clubs played his music, mainly House and Techno; people were dancing like never before. “But I was really lousy at sending my demos out to labels" he admits. Like many other 19-year olds he saw his projects going down the drain one by one. After a while he got tired of empty promises and left the music business for a while. He studied to become a chef, got a job offer at The Sheraton Hotel and moved to Stockholm; he got back into songwriting once again since he was alone in a new town and his friends were all back in Malmoe. “ It was around the same time which I wrote Roma" he explains. It took about six months before he played it for any one. The breakthrough came when he signed up with a manager. The reactions were phenomenal" this is a hit".
Today, Cameron is signed with SonyBMG and Roma is in the the 2005 Swedish finals for the Eurovison Song Contest.
Besides the preparations for the February19th Festival event in Linkoping , Sweden , Cameron works on his debut album. One of the tracks is a collaboration with Alex Papaconstantinou who amongst others works with Stephen Simmonds and Antique. "I will collaborate with several different writers on this album, Alex and Robin-Rex amongst others whom I also collaborated on Roma with" says Cameron. “ I'm developing constantly as a song writer, producer and artist, but as a stage performer I'm doing pretty well as of right now". Something for the viewers of the Swedish finals for the Eurovison Song Contest to experience with their own eyes.
